Venture capital activity in India soared 217% in 2021: Refinitiv

India came second among Asia-Pacific countries in terms of venture capital activity for the whole of 2021 at $36.5 billion, up 217% from it a year ago, according to the latest Asia-Pacific private equity investment report from Refinitiv, an LSEG firm, showed.

China leads Asia-Pacific countries with venture capital activity of $83.3 billion, up 65.5% from 2020 levels.

In total, venture capital activity in Asia-Pacific totaled $152.2 billion across 6,272 deals in the year 2021.

This reflects an increase of 106.9% in value and 69.1% in volume compared to the same period in 2020, according to the Refinitiv report.

Main venture capital investments

Asia-Pacific’s top three venture stage investments totaled $10.5 billion, completed in the year 2021. The largest is Taiwan’s Footprintku Inc with $3.8 billion, followed by Flipkart Online Services Pvt Ltd of India, with $3.6 billion in net worth. Buyback operations in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, buyout-stage investments in Asia-Pacific totaled a record $105.6 billion, an increase of 61.2% from a year ago. Hexaware Technologies Ltd is among the top five PE buyout deals in Asia, with a deal value of $3 billion. Among the top venture capital deals in Asia Pacific were big name names such as Flipkart Online Services Ltd with a deal value of $3.6 billion; Bundl Technologies Pvt Ltd (Swiggy) at $2.05 billion, Think and Learn (BYJU) at $1.75 billion; Blinkit India (formerly Grofers) $1.37 billion and Sporta (Dream 11) with a deal value of $1.24 billion.

Sequoia Capital India LLP ranked as the sixth most active investor in venture capital investment in Asia Pacific, with a huge participation in 90 deals.
